Heat Pumps Funding 2025: Your Essential Guide

As the UK increases its efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote energy efficiency, homeowners are increasingly turning to sustainable heating solutions. Heat pumps have emerged as a leading technology in this transition, offering both environmental and economic advantages.

A heat pump is an energy-efficient system that provides heating and cooling for homes by transferring heat from external sources into your home during winter and reversing the process in summer. Unlike traditional heating systems that generate heat through combustion, heat pumps move existing heat, making them significantly more efficient.

There are two primary types of heat pumps:

Air-Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs): These extract heat from the outside air, even in low temperatures, and are suitable for a wide range of climates.

Ground-Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs): Also known as geothermal heat pumps, they draw heat from the ground, offering higher efficiency but typically involving higher installation costs due to the need for underground piping.

Benefits of Installing a Heat Pump

With energy prices set to rise again in spring 2025, many homeowners are looking for more cost effective solutions to save money on their energy. Heat pumps can be up to three times more efficient than traditional gas boilers, and by reducing energy consumption, homeowners can lower their utility bills using this technology. Despite the initial investment being quite high, there are currently a range of grants and incentives available to assist with the cost of heat pump installation.

Heat pumps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a lower carbon footprint and helping the UK to achieve its climate targets. With energy-efficient homes becoming more desirable, installation of a heat pump has the potential to enhance your property value.

Providing both heating and cooling, most heat pumps have dual functionality by providing both heating and cooling, this can offer year-round climate control.

Grants and Incentives Available in 2025

To encourage the adoption of heat pumps, both the UK Government and other financial institutions have introduced several schemes.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers grants to homeowners replacing old heating systems with a more energy efficient heat pump. You can gain access to a £7,500 grant if you are looking to install either an air-source or ground-source heat pump in your home.

To be eligible for this scheme you must own a property with an installation capacity up to 45kWh and the property must be in either England or Wales. It must also have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation.

This scheme is designed to be straightforward for homeowners to access and apply for. You must use an MCS certified installer to be eligible for the scheme, on your behalf they will apply for the scheme, carry out all liaison with Ofgem and claim the grant from Ofgem at the end of the installation process.

Warm Homes Plan

The Warm Homes Plan is a government scheme which is currently running to tackle fuel poverty and allow access to clean energy for those in low-income households, the plan aims to take over one million households out of fuel poverty between 2025 and 2028.

Around £3.2 billion has been allocated to the Warm Homes Plan and grants have been distributed through local authorities. The funding provides grants of up to £15,000 for energy performance improvements and an additional £15,000 for low-carbon heating installations.

For access to this scheme, residents will need to contact their local council to enquire about participation and application procedures, availability may vary by region.
